Interest on the Balance Due

If you don’t pay your due taxes before the deadline you will be charged interest. This is applicable even if you qualify for a two-month extension because you were out of the country. Now this interest will run until you pay the entire due tax. Even if you have a valid and good reason for not making tax payments, still you will owe interest.

Note: Even if you have a valid and good reason for not making tax payments on time, you still owe interest from the IRS.

Late Penalties

The late payment penalty is usually levied at ½ of 1% of any taxes (besides the estimated tax) which aren’t paid by April 15. The penalty is charged for each month or part of the month when the tax is not paid. The maximum penalty charged is 25%.

However, if you can provide a reasonable cause for not paying on time, then you won’t be charged any late payment penalty. All you have to do is attach a statement along with your return providing a full explanation of the reason. You shouldn’t attach the statement to your Form 4868.

The reasonable cause for nonpayment on time for a given period is only applicable if the below requirements are achieved.
